Q EXPERIENTIAL ACTIVITY #1THE SAVORING EXPEDITION (Adapted from Froh & Parks (2013, pp. 149-153) Have you ever been engaged in a positive experience and become aware, while it was happening, that you were having “the time of your life?" Have you ever enjoyed a positive activity so much that you wished it could go on forever? Attending to, appreciating and enhancing positive experiences in one’s life is known as savoring. Unfortunately, we often fail to appreciate these experiences fully, and we may not be consciously aware of the specific things that make these experiences enjoyable. This experiential activity encourages you to practice your savoring skills by identifying and seeking out a positive experience, savoring it, and reflecting on the strategies you used to savor that experience. INTRODUCTIONS Before you start, read the section on savoring on pp. 164-166 of your textbook, to get a better understanding of what savoring is and learn about some strategies Bryant and Veroff (2007) suggests that enhances your savoring experience. The savoring expedition is broken down into the following two phases, each involving several simple steps that will guide you to savor more fully: PHASE 1: PLAN YOUR SAVORING EXPEDITION Step 1: Choose something to savor. Before embarking on your savoring expedition, think about an activity, experience, place, or object that you find enjoyable that will be the target of your expedition. Step 2: Set aside some time for savoring. Block out a time when you are free from having to think about other things or engage in other activities to savor. Step 3: Gather materials for your savoring expedition. Determine the things (e.g., money, comfortable shoes) you will need to have with you on your expedition. PHASE 2: EMBARK ON YOUR SAVORING EXPEDITION Step 4: Set out on your savoring expedition. When you arrive at your destination, try to set aside any worries or concerns, and be fully in the moment and appreciate what is immediately in front of you. Step 5: Savor. Try to pinpoint what you find enjoyable (e.g., sights, sounds, smells, emotions, thoughts) about the particular activity, experience, place, or object you are trying to savor. Use some of the strategies Bryant and Veroff (2007) suggests to enhance your savoring experience. If you find that you are having trouble savoring, do not criticize or force yourself. If you feel your savoring expedition is too contrived or unnatural, then go home and try again another time. After you have completed these two phases, carefully reflect on what you enjoyed about the activity. Briefly describe your savoring expedition and respond to the following questions on your reflection paper in an integrated essay format. The reflection paper should be 3-4 double spaced pages using standard font and margins. Review the grading criteria before writing the paper. 1. What were the specific things made the expedition enjoyable to you? Try to describe what you felt by naming specific positive feelings (e.g., joy, contentment, peace) you experienced. 2. How was it to savor the experiences you had while on your savoring expedition? Was it easy or difficult? What part of the experiences made it easy or difficult for you to savor? 3. How was your experience during the savoring expedition different from how you might normally have acted in the same situation? 4. What strategies did you use to get the most out of your savoring expedition? 5. What may be some potential obstacles that prevents you from savoring more often or more fully during your everyday life? How might you find ways to increase savoring in your daily life? 6. How would you evaluate this experiential activity? Was it helpful? What did you like about the activity? If you would you like to change something about this activity, what would it be? 7. What have you learned from this experiential activity that you did not know beforehand? The expedition I went for is to go to my dream place, Paris. I enjoyed every moment of this expedition. I have been planning since I was a kid and I fell in love with the place when I used to watch French movies and series. I like the colorful atmosphere the city offers to its people. The expedition brought another level of contentment in my life. I had the most peaceful time right there. However, I met with few obstacles in my way to the Paris but I overlooked it because this was going to be the most memorable journey of my life.
